Money
ATM machines are plentiful and work with many international cards. Currency is the Pound Sterling, but three Scottish banks have the right to produce their own design of notes - so you will come across four different designs for each denomination note. Scottish notes are generally accepted in England (with the odd exception, which if it happens is usually a mistake rather than policy). If you take them abroad, however, you'll have trouble changing them.
Smoking
Smoking is banned in all enclosed public spaces in Scotland. This includes all pubs and clubs though some hotels are exercising a loophole to allow smoking in some bedrooms. The law includes commercial vehicles so trains, buses and taxis are smoke free too.
Visas
If your visit is a long one (over 6 months) you'll need a visa if you don't come from the European Economic Area. Shorter visits have less stringent requirements. Full details can be found on the Government's official visas site.
